"Caring for the Sea that Unites Us" - Blue Flag Mediterranean week 2021
With a slight delay this year, but nonetheless, true to our annual meeting, Caravia Beach Hotel and Bungalows organized for the 7th consecutive year a beach cleanup and activities with our junior guests.
Our seas and oceans are powerful forces of nature that must be protected.
Caravia Beach Hotel & Bungalows is dedicated to protecting our seas and nature with various activities throughout the year, whether it is behind the scenes or not.
Our planet’s oceans make up 70% of the Earth’ s surface and over 70% of our oxygen is produced by the ocean. Therefore, we are clearly to the ocean, through the climate, weather and even the air we breathe.
Caravia Beach Hotel & Bungalows takes steps to protect our oceans. This mysterious & miraculous underwater kingdom needs our help to thrive.
Five unbelievable facts about the ocean you probably didn’t know!
1. Our oceans cover more than 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface.
With so much of the Earth’s surface taken up by ocean, it’s evident how vital these marine environments are to the planet, and how much there still is to be explored.
2. The majority of life on Earth is aquatic.
As so much of the Earth’s surface is underwater, it comes as no surprise that marine species outnumber those on land. But, it’s an incredible 94 per cent of the Earth’s living species that exist within the oceans.
3. Less than five per cent of the planet’s oceans have been explored.
According to the Ocean Service, man has explored less than five per cent of Earth’s oceans. As researchers strive to discover more, we’re continually getting to know our oceans better.
4. The world’s longest mountain chain is underwater.
Earth’s longest chain of mountains, the Mid-Ocean Ridge, is almost entirely beneath the ocean, stretching across a distance of 65,000 kilometres. It’s said that this mountain chain is less explored than the surface of Venus or Mars.
5. There are more historic artefacts under the sea than in all of the world’s museums.
Around 1,000 shipwrecks lie off the Florida Keys alone, some of which are within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Other underwater museums have been created in recent years, including the Mediterranean’s submerged bronze statue, Christ of the Abyss.
The effect of climate change on the ocean
The climate crisis has had a detrimental effect on our planet’s oceans and the life that inhabits it. A 2016 report found that the oceans have absorbed 90% of global warming since the 1970s.
This has caused ocean ecosystems to radically change. Warming oceans alter currents, wind and weather patterns, transforming the fabric of the world we live in. It has also led to coral bleaching, mass migration and stunted development of marine life.
The geography of our planet is also under threat by the warming of oceans. The polar ice is melting, causing sea levels to rise at around a rate of one-eighth of an inch per year. Entire islands and around 2% of the world’s land could be wiped off the map completely as the sea level rises.
How does Caravia Beach Hotel & Bungalows work to protect our oceans?
The Blue Flag International Program has organized this year an environmental activity for the Mediterranean countries, the #BlueFlagMedWeek.
Within the realm of the Clean Seas initiative, this action is organized by UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), and will take place from July 3rd to July 10th and with all Mediterranean countries paricitpating: Greece, Algieria, France, Spain, Israel, Croatia, Cyprus, Malta, Montenegro, Porutgal, Slovenia & Turkey.
This beach cleaning operation taking place across no less than 10 Mediterreanean countries as part of the UN Environment #CleanSeas global campaign to reduce marine litter: https://cleanseas.org/about
Given that all the above 10 countries share the same seas, the Mediterranean, the motto of the opeartion is very topical:
“Caring for the sea that unites us”!
Caravia Beach Hotel & Bungalows with the assistance of its Mini Club members & our amazing #animationteam2021 took part in this initiative.
We are beyond happy and proud that our young friends that took part in this activity, that included a lecture on environmental protection, a beach cleaning operation as well as tree planting, as it gave them the opportunity to take part in an educational activity during their beach holiday.
Caravia Beach Hotel & Bungalows is committed to protecting the environment as well as caring for the sea that unites us!
